I loved reading this! I came to baking similarly, delving into it while working on my master's degree and sharing bread, hand pies, biscotti with people in my cohort. I'm now working in a bakery and reconsidering PhD programs; in the same way that I love sharing baked goods with people, I love sharing ideas through teaching and discussions. I also find something so complementary about the physical, manual nature of baking and the thought work of researching and writing. I wrote about that a bit on my newsletter: https://beurrage.substack.com/p/body-and-mind

I love this, Clare. Sharing baked goods is so much like sharing ideas. I couldn't agree more about the complementary nature of baking and writing. Research is such a fundamental part of academia and baking, we have only scratched the surface of knowledge production in any academic or baking field. I saved your post and can't wait to read it, Clare. Also, if you ever want to talk PhD programs or grad. school, I am always here! Anyway I can help a future PhD student find a PhD program that aligns with their goals is something I feel super strongly about.

Thank you! I really appreciate the offer to discuss graduate programs, too.

I like to think I cook, write and sing for the same reason: to connect with others, to provide some sort of fleeting contentment. 🌸

I’m happy Substack can enable these powerful synergies 🫶🏼 your approach resonates deeply with me.

This essay is as close to an introduction as you can get. The joy of how you became a food writer and baker shines through in this essay. I read it to Mom and we loved it. Keep up the good work. It is filled with the human touch and an excellent comparison which good writing always should have. At least that's what my teachers used to tell me!
